Winter Boat Project: Boom Re-rig

Posted on May 4, 2022June 9, 2022 by Mike

We had a number of boat projects on the “to-do” list this winter as we hunkered down at the dock, and I’m going to try and put together some blog posts to cover them as we often get asked for details on these things from other sailors. Some of these were inside the boat and Continue Reading

The Engine Mount Story

Posted on September 17, 2021January 7, 2022 by Mike

This is a bit out of order (as it all happened before we went to Roscoe Inlet), but we haven’t really had a chance to explain what we’ve been talking about with the engine mounts and what all happened. So here goes. We had left Shearwater/Bella Bella to travel to the outer islands and work Continue Reading

We spent Thursday night (July 15) in Smuggler’s Cove on the Sunshine Coast, one of our (and probably many boaters’) favourite anchorages in the Vancouver area. It gave us an opportunity to catch up one final time with good friends who were renting a cabin in Halfmoon Bay. On Friday, we sailed across to Jedediah Continue Reading

Finished a job today that I've been slowly taking Finished a job today that I've been slowly taking care of this last month.

One of the Gozzard trademarks are the bronze dolphins adorning the toerails on either side of the boat. Well, ours were looking pretty sad. The original clear coat had chipped and failed and the bronze was tarnishing badly, pitting in places.

So... remove old clear coat, sand, polish, polish, polish, apply new clear coat, reinstall, and they're looking a lot happier now!

Back at the boat in Trinidad after a pretty wonder Back at the boat in Trinidad after a pretty wonderful 6 weeks in Vancouver seeing friends and family.

Glenda is still there for a little while and it's certainly an adjustment for both of us after pretty much 2 years of sailing together. I know she's looking forward to getting back to the boat.

Meanwhile, I've spent the last two days cleaning up the boat, putting things away, and settling in.

Yesterday I got the rented air conditioner installed, the yard set us up with some nice steps to get on and off the boat, and today started early with a run to the market and grocery store to stock up on food.

It's an old sail, and we knew it, and we'll look into whether it's worth fixing, but I'm guessing no. Sigh. More boat 💸

One of several tortoises wandering on our path yes One of several tortoises wandering on our path yesterday as we hiked with the awesome wardens through the forest reserve on Union Island and up to Mount Taboi, which, at 999' above sea level is the highest peak in the Grenadines.

The forest reserve is home to the endangered Union Island gecko (found only here on this small island), and like the other few remaining wild places in the area, is constantly threatened with development, encroachment by resorts, and invasive species. The staff and local volunteers are working hard, with some success, to build awareness and foster international support to protect the area.
