Making the most of a great chandelry
Photos from the Broughtons
After a few days in Alert Bay, we headed North across Queen Charlotte Strait. We made several stops – Polkinghorne Islands, Grappler Cove, Laura Cove, Echo Bay, and then Waddington Bay. Once you leave the larger towns, cell service (and therefore internet!) is very limited. These are a few photos of our week away from Continue Reading
Alert Bay, BC
As you leave Johnstone Strait, the first town you come to is Alert Bay. Located on Cormorant Island in traditional Kwakwaka’wakw territory, Alert Bay was the social hub of the Central Coast during the height of the West Coast fishery. It is now a much smaller village, with about 1200 full time residents. We stopped Continue Reading

The Tide Waits for No One…
I grew up learning to sail in Ottawa, where “current” was what happened on flowing river (mostly when canoeing), and “tide” was what swallowed up the beach slowly on those rare family vacations to the ocean. Whales!
We have finally found the whales!
A Friendly Harbour
A quick update… From Jedediah Island, we sailed north to the town of Comox (well, motored mostly, as there wasn’t much wind). The main purpose for the trip was so Glenda could get her second vaccination, which we had booked before leaving Vancouver. We also took advantage of the two nights in Comox to provision Continue Reading
Jedediah Island
We spent Thursday night (July 15) in Smuggler’s Cove on the Sunshine Coast, one of our (and probably many boaters’) favourite anchorages in the Vancouver area. It gave us an opportunity to catch up one final time with good friends who were renting a cabin in Halfmoon Bay. On Friday, we sailed across to Jedediah Continue Reading
Crossing the Strait Today
We spent yesterday evening in the crowded anchorage of Newcastle Island in Nanaimo, but we have a nice southeast wind today that will be perfect for crossing to the Sunshine Coast. Not without a bit of navigational complexity, as leaving Nanaimo the radio crackled to life indicating that “Whiskey Golf is closed.” Whiskey golf is Continue Reading
Pondering Water Temperature
There’s a moment in one of Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Cafe stories (and don’t we all dearly miss Stuart McLean?) that is stuck in my head at the moment. He was talking about summers at the cottage, or cabin here in BC, and “that most Canadian of lies… ‘it’s warm once you get in!’ One of Continue Reading
